Dan Jackson/Manifest Photography -Haggadah Project

Behind the scenes look at the book I am writing and illustrating. Images from exotic locations. Some studio work. Excepts from my travel journals. Things I've learned along the way that are shaping the direction of the project. Maybe even some sneak peaks from time to time. A way for me to record the process of shooting and writing my book -because sometimes the journey is as important as the destination.

Dan Jackson is a fine art & commercial photographer, raconteur and a bumptious bloviator who likes the journalist's credo; To afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

Ask me anything

We joined another caravan headed for the Temple at Dandera. When we arrived I handed Shooting Star his reading material and thanked him. As we walked from the parking lot to the entrance he asked “what is this?” motioning to the feather on my hat. I said, “the feather?” “Yes, why did you put it there?” “It came with the hat. I bought it that way.” He asked “what is it for?” I think his training as an Egyptologist was clouding his ability to understand that there was nothing to understand. He was looking for significance like the ostrich feathered crowns Pharaohs wore. I shrugged and said “Pretty sure it’s just for decoration.” “Decoration?” He looked sceptical but moved on. “What kind of bird?” “I dunno -maybe a pheasant.” “H-uh” he still seemed mystified “I think some day I would like to meet a pheasant.” (The ostrich plume has exactly the same number of feathers on each side of it’s quill. The ancients illustrated Pharaohs wearing them on their heads to signify their commitment to equality and justice.)
